About the role
- Attorney providing legal counsel and analysis of legal matters supporting M&T’s business units and mitigating legal risks. Representing organization in litigation matters and drafting required documents.
Responsibilities
- Support assigned business unit by providing analysis and counsel on basic legal matters
- Assist with mitigating legal risks facing M&T
- Execute corporate policy and positions on legal issues
- Conduct research on a variety of legal issues
- May represent the organization in litigation matters
- Participate in the development of departmental policies; review existing law and make recommendations regarding new procedures
- Provide legal advice within area of expertise and answer day-to-day questions
- Draft and review documents to include regulatory disclosures, marketing material and licensing statutes
- Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- New York State or applicable state bar admission
- Ability to identify legal issues, evaluate legal risks, and offer solutions
- Strong negotiation, interpersonal, organizational skills
- Excellent writing, analytical and verbal skills
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Experience with the review and analysis of credit/loan agreement documentation, forbearance agreements, loan modifications, etc. is ideal
- Experience in commercial bankruptcy or workout is preferred.
