About the role

Data Scientist leading the NLP Squad at Telefónica Tech. Driving AI solutions and data analysis while ensuring best practices in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

Perform exploratory analyses and modeling to support decisions made by the NLP Squad.
Ensure the squad adopts best practices: evaluation, data versioning, and reproducible experiments.
Develop the team (especially junior and mid-level members) in NLP and applied AI — provide technical leadership.
Serve as the interface with the business area, aligning stakeholder expectations.
Lead complex discussions without creating noise or fear around AI.
Make informed trade-offs: rules vs models, small models vs LLMs, train vs buy.
Understand that value resides in the pipeline, not in the model in isolation.
Anticipate impacts on cost, latency, observability, LGPD (Brazilian data protection law), and scalability.
Design for maintenance and long-term evolution, not only POCs.
Question simplistic metrics (isolated accuracy, a flashy demo).

Strong command of Python for data science (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, etc.).
Experience with prompt engineering and working with language models (LLMs/SLMs).
Familiarity with generative AI frameworks (LangChain, Hugging Face, OpenAI APIs, etc.).
Experience with Big Data environments (Spark, Hadoop, Databricks, etc.).
Experience with code versioning (Git, Azure) and development best practices.
Good communication skills for exchanging ideas across different areas.
Proactive in proposing solutions and structuring new approaches.
Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to changing needs.
Promote best practices: evaluation, data versioning, reproducible experiments.

Experience on projects with complex architectures involving more than 50 people.
English or Spanish for communication with major international tech partners.
Academic experience.
Publications or participation in applied research projects.
