Geotechnical Engineer assessing and analyzing ground stability for waterfront projects at Moffatt & Nichol. Ensuring safety and durability for construction through various analysis and collaborations.
Responsibilities
Examines the sites of proposed buildings or other structures, such as dams or tunnels, or those to be used for drilling or mining projects, to check soil stability and rock formations
Confirms the safety and durability of surfaces for building projects, design structural foundations, and conduct environmental testing
Conducts tests on items in a laboratory. They study properties, note any contaminations or other issues, and produce reports about their findings for project managers
Study safety quality standards for different projects and make sure that each project adheres to these standards
Inspects foundations, observing drilling activities, and reviewing work plans are some of the ways geotechnical engineers ensure adherence to these standards
Present possible project risks, explain seismic activities, make recommendations for foundations and excavation activities, and summarize the progress of individual projects
Perform geostructural analysis and design of waterfront structures, including bulkheads, deep foundations, retaining walls, and flood control structures
Interpret field test data (SPT, sCPT, FVST, DMT) and estimate soil engineering properties for design
Assigns lab tests and interpret results
Estimates deep foundation lateral and axial capacities
Designs bulkheads, retaining walls, and floodwalls
Designs wall structural components, including wales, tierods, tiebacks, cap beams, etc.
Develops plans and specifications
Help resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
Calculates construction quantity estimates
Works closely with other architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
Performs office-based construction administration including review of shop drawings and technical submittals
Performs construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or relevant experience
4+ years of experience
Professional Engineer licensure in Brazil (CREA)
Experience using and proficiency with the following geotechnical software package categories:
• Excavation support (ie: DeepEX, WALLAP, Support-IT, CT Shoring Suite)
• Finite element analysis (ie: Plaxis)
• Settlement (ie: Settle3, FoSSA, etc.)
Strong understanding of ACI, AISC, AASHTO, IBC, NDS, and other design codes
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
Experience in Civil3D a plus
Experience with structural analysis software (SAP, STAAD) a plus
