Assistant Attorney General in Gun Violence Prevention Unit enforcing Massachusetts gun safety laws and supporting compliance efforts. Involves litigation, investigations, and community engagement.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the GVPU Director to advance the Unit’s mission, with a primary focus on enforcement-related investigations and litigation
Screening and developing new matters aligned with GVPU enforcement priorities
Investigating potential violations of Massachusetts gun laws and related consumer protection or regulatory provisions
Building litigation-ready factual records and coordinating evidence-gathering with law enforcement and agency partners
Drafting and litigating enforcement matters in state and federal court, including pleadings, motions, discovery, and hearings/trial preparation
Negotiating and enforcing settlements and other compliance resolutions, as appropriate
Coordinating with internal AGO teams and external partners (including law enforcement agencies, District Attorneys, and relevant state agencies) to advance GVPU enforcement efforts
Supporting cross-state and multi-party matters, including multi-state investigations or coordinated actions with other Attorneys General, as appropriate
Supporting legislative and policy initiatives, including legal research, analysis, and drafting
Engaging with community stakeholders as needed, including through developing and implementing communications strategies
Requirements
Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission in short order
A minimum of six (6) years of full-time legal experience, including complex investigations and litigation experience, preferred
Civil enforcement experience is required; experience with criminal and/or regulatory enforcement is considered a plus
Demonstrated ability to develop factual records and translate investigations into enforcement outcomes, including litigation or negotiated resolutions
Experience working collaboratively with government partners, including law enforcement and regulatory agencies, is strongly preferred
Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date
Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date
