About the role
- Solicitor providing legal support for the City’s planning and development divisions in Hamilton. Responsible for legal advocacy, advice, and minimizing risks regarding planning and administrative law.
Responsibilities
- Support the City’s planning and development and engineering divisions with legal advocacy.
- Provide high quality and effective legal advice and services to management and staff.
- Develop proactive strategies to protect the interests of the City and reduce legal risks.
- Ensure legal services contribute to effective programs and services including research and advice.
- Review and prepare documents, policies and procedures for legal compliance.
- Provide legal opinions and advice on matters posing significant risks to the City.
- Work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City policies.

Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws degree or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized University.
- Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Ontario.
- 3-5 years of post-call experience in planning, development and administrative law.
- Demonstrated interest in municipal law.
- High level of professionalism and integrity.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Highly developed analytical and business planning skills.
- Experience in designing and delivering customer focused programs and services.
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Understanding of key statutes, regulations and by-laws affecting the Division and municipality.
