Financial Controller overseeing financial operations at Brasenose College. Responsible for managing day-to-day finance operations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
Responsibilities
Provide day‑to‑day operational oversight of the Finance Bursary team
Responsible for the effective management of the College’s day-to-day financial operations
Prepare accounts to trial balance for the college and its trading subsidiary
Line manage the Finance Assistant responsible for the Student Billing function
Responsible for the month end close down processes and timely production of the monthly management accounts pack
Support the Finance Director for budget reporting, to standardise regular month end journal entries
Identify the critical tasks at month end
Deputise for the Finance director when required
Support existing projects to integrate fully the sub ledgers relating to students, conference business, other transactions and the development office
Ensure processes linking the sub ledgers are robust, compliant with financial accounting standards, vat and internal controls
Ensure that all transactions in the accounting system comply with current VAT regulations
Prepare the VAT return and keeping up to date with current VAT rules and changing College processes
Develop and maintain the annual financial timetable, ensuring all deadlines are defined, appropriately allocated, and consistently met
Monitor progress and adjust workflows accordingly to ensure operational and statutory deadlines are met
Requirements
Previous experience of a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, financial accounting or similar role
Demonstrable experience of overseeing day-to-day finance operations and supervising transactional finance activities (e.g. accounts payable, receivable, billing and month-end processes)
An accountancy qualification
Experience of completing month end close to tight timetable
Some technical accounting knowledge, experience of month end, and vat returns in particular
Ability to identify problems and develop solutions
Excellent numeracy skills and good report writing skills
Advanced knowledge of Excel and good system skills
Excellent organisation skills
Ability to work independently and self-motivate
A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Good team working skills, including flexibility and adaptability
Good interpersonal skills, including ability to develop good working relationships and to persuade and influence

Benefits
Appointment: This is a permanent full-time post. There will be an initial probationary period of six months. During this period the post holder’s employment may be terminated by one week’s notice on either side. Thereafter the period of notice to terminate employment is three months.
The appointment will be conditional on verification of the successful candidate’s availability for employment in this country, and subject to the receipt of satisfactory references.
The successful candidate will be required to complete a confidential medical questionnaire which will be forwarded to our Occupational Health Department who will assess their fitness to perform this role.
Salary: To be paid on Brasenose College Grade 8 salary scale, currently £48,889.00 - £58,035.00 per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience.
Advancement up the scale is on merit.
Hours of Working: Standard full-time hours for the Finance Bursary are 35 per week, from 9 am until 5 pm, with an unpaid hour taken for lunch, Monday to Friday. Some flexibility, including a hybrid working arrangement is possible, with exact working hours to be agreed with the successful candidate. During probation attendance in office is required.
